Ubuntu Linux 6.06 Installation Checklist
Tested on Ubuntu Linux 6.06 Dapper Drake.
Note: This installation checklist is customized for a specific hardware configuration. The programmes are mainly chosen by personal preferences. It should give you an idea how an installation can be done in a fast and comfortable way.
- Download Ubuntu, burn a CD/DVD and install it.
- Install all updates.
- Add extra repositories.
- Remove unused programmes.
sudo apt-get remove evince evolution evolution-webcal openoffice.org-evolution gnome-games gnome-games-data rhythmbox totem totem-gstreamer tsclient
- Install important programmes and configure Java (choose Sun).
sudo apt-get install acroread acroread-plugins audacity dia firefox-dom-inspector gnochm gparted k3b k3b-i18n libdvdcss2 libk3b2-mp3 kpilot linux-k7 mc mencoder mozilla-acroread mozilla-mplayer mozilla-thunderbird mplayer mplayer-fonts sun-java5-jdk sun-java5-plugin xmms xmms-flac xmms-mp4 xmms-skins vym timer-applet unrar tvtime xfonts-intl-arabic xfonts-intl-asian xfonts-intl-chinese xfonts-intl-chinese-big xfonts-intl-european xfonts-intl-japanese xfonts-intl-japanese-big xfonts-intl-phonetic gsfonts-x11 msttcorefonts && sudo fc-cache -f -v && sudo update-alternatives --config java
- Restart the pc
- Remove unused kernel versions.
sudo apt-get remove linux-386 linux-image-386 linux-restricted-modules-386 linux-image-2.6.15-23-386 linux-image-2.6.15-26-386
- Manual installation: Skype, Krusader, Flash
- Gnome: Activate thunderbird as standard email application.
- Install the printer.
- Copy the backup data files to the new installed system.
