Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon Installation Checklist


Tested on Ubuntu Linux 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon. (last test: 2008-08-09)

Note: This installation checklist is customized for a specific hardware configuration. The programmes are mainly chosen by personal preferences. It should give you an idea how an installation can be done in a fast and comfortable way.
  1. Remove unused programmes.
    sudo apt-get remove apport bittorrent bluez-* contact-lookup-applet eog evince evolution evolution-common evolution-webcal gnome-games* nautilus-sendto openoffice.org* rhythmbox serpentine tomboy totem-mozilla tracker tsclient

  2. Install all Ubuntu updates.

  3. Add the Medibuntu repositories for restricted applications.
    sudo wget www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/gutsy.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update

  4. Optional: Remove the CD-ROM as installation source.
  5. sudo perl -p -i.bak -e 's/deb cdrom/# deb cdrom/g' /etc/apt/sources.list && sudo apt-get update

  6. Install additional programmes. (standard repository)
    sudo apt-get install acroread acroread-plugins bum camorama checkinstall dia easytag emerald filelight flashplugin-nonfree gconf gnochm googleearth gparted gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad-multiverse gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly-multiverse kde-i18n-de kcontrol kdebase-kio-plugins kpdf kpilot krusader libdvdread3 liblame0 imagemagick k3b k3b-i18n k9copy kino mc mozilla-acroread mozilla-thunderbird msttcorefonts nautilus-actions normalize-audio ntfs-config ntp sensors-applet skype sox streamtuner sun-java6-plugin timer-applet transcode vlc vym vorbis-tools unrar w32codecs xmms xmms-mp4 xmms-wma && sudo fc-cache -f -v && mkdir -p ~/.adobe/Acrobat/8.0/Preferences && echo "/usr/lib/firefox" >> ~/.adobe/Acrobat/8.0/Preferences/acrogre.conf && sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

  7. Install additional programmes. (backports)
    sudo perl -p -i.1.bak -e 's|# deb http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-backports|deb http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-backports|g' /etc/apt/sources.list && sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install audacious audacious-crossfade audacious-plugins audacious-plugins-extra audacity gimp hplip inkscape libtheora0 libxine1-ffmpeg mencoder mplayer nmap powertop startupmanager totem-xine && sudo perl -p -i.2.bak -e 's|deb http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-backports|# deb http://at.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-backports|g' /etc/apt/sources.list && sudo apt-get update

  8. Fix the GNOME Desktop emblem bug (emblems are too small).
    sudo sed -i.bak 'N;s/\[scalable\/emblems\]\nSize=128/\[scalable\/emblems\]\nSize=32/;P;D;' /usr/share/icons/Human/index.theme

  9. Disable the upgrade notice for Ubuntu 8.04 in the update manager.
    gconf-editor
  10. Search for /apps/update-manager and disable check_dist_upgrades.

  11. Install Firefox 3: Download Firefox 3 and close Firefox 2:
    mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla-pre-ff3.bak && cd ~/Desktop && sudo tar -jxvf firefox-3*.bz2 -C /opt && rm firefox-3*.bz2 && sudo mv /opt/firefox/plugins /opt/firefox/plugins.bak && sudo ln -s /usr/lib/firefox/plugins /opt/firefox/plugins && sudo dpkg-divert --divert /usr/bin/firefox.ubuntu --rename /usr/bin/firefox && sudo ln -s /opt/firefox/firefox /usr/bin/firefox

  12. Install OpenOffice: Download the deb packages for OpenOffice 2.4 or OpenOffice 3.0.

    Option A: OpenOffice 2.4
    cd ~/Desktop && tar -vxzf OOo*Linux*install*.tar.gz && cd OOH*/DEBS/ && sudo dpkg -i *.deb && cd desktop-integration && sudo dpkg -i *.deb && cd ~/Desktop && rm OOo*.gz && rm -r OOH*/
    Deactivate the update notification (two separate steps, the first step may result in an error)
    cp /etc/apt/preferences apt.pref.tmp

    Install the .docx/.xlsx/.pptx format converter for OpenOffice.
    wget katana.oooninja.com/f/software/odf-converter-integrator-0.1.5-1.i386.rpm && sudo apt-get install alien && sudo alien -d --scripts odf-converter*.rpm && sudo dpkg -i odf-converter*.deb && rm odf-converter*

  13. Option B: OpenOffice 3.0
    cd ~/Desktop && tar -vxzf OOo*Linux*install*.tar.gz && cd OOO3*/DEBS/ && sudo dpkg -i *.deb && cd desktop* && sudo dpkg -i *.deb && cd ~/Desktop && rm OOo*.gz && rm -r OOO3*/

  14. Reinstall Eye of Gnome (Version Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn) - fixes mouse-zoom which removed in Ubuntu 7.10.
    wget mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/ubuntu/pool/main/e/eog/eog_2.18.1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb && sudo dpkg -i eog_2.18.1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb && rm eog_2.18*.deb
    Deactivate the update notification (two separate steps, the first step may result in an error)
    cp /etc/apt/preferences apt.pref.tmp
    sudo echo -e "Package: eog\nPin: version 2.18.*\nPin-Priority: 1001\n" >> apt.pref.tmp && sudo mv apt.pref.tmp /etc/apt/preferences

  15. Install the F-Prot Virus Scanner.
    wget files.f-prot.com/files/unix-trial/fp-Linux-i686-ws.tar.gz && sudo mv fp-Linux*.gz /opt && cd /opt && sudo tar -xvzf fp-Linux*.gz && cd f-prot && sudo ./install*.pl && cd .. && sudo rm fp-Linux*.gz && sudo apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev && cd ~ && wget web.tiscali.it/sharp/xfprot/xfprot-1.24.tar.gz && tar -xvzf xfprot-*.gz && cd xfprot*/ && ./configure && make && sudo checkinstall && sudo dpkg -i xfprot*.deb && cd .. && sudo rm -r xfprot*
    When asked set the F-Prot installation path to /usr/bin and choose No at "Build with debug statements?" (X-FProt). Test: EICAR Virus Testfile

  16. Compile libgpod-0.6.0 to use iPod Classic 80GB and install gtkpod iPod manager.
    Note: At the step "checkinstall" you have to rename Name: [ libgpod ] to libgpod2
    sudo apt-get install build-essential libglib2.0-dev libgtk2.0-dev libsgutils1-dev checkinstall gettext && wget switch.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/gtkpod/libgpod-0.6.0.tar.gz && tar -xzvf libgpod* && cd libgpod* && ./configure && make && sudo checkinstall && sudo ln -fs /usr/local/lib/libgpod.so.3 /usr/lib/libgpod.so.2 && sudo ln -s /usr/local/lib/libgpod.so.3 /usr/lib/libgpod.so.3 && sudo apt-get install gtkpod-aac mp3gain recode && cd .. && rm -fr libgpod*

  17. Optional (if not working): Enable fullscreen for MPlayer.

  18. Customize Firefox
    - set preferences (about:config): enable typeaheadfind
    - file preferences: associate MP3-Audio streaming with /usr/bin/audacious
    - install extensions
    - install greasemonkey userscripts

  19. GNOME and Ubuntu tuning

    - Remove not needed interface items.
    - Fetch eye candy. :P (GNOME-Look.org)
    - Enable Thunderbird as standard email application.

  20. Install UbuntuTweak for customized Ubuntu settings.

    Bootup-Manager: disable avahi-daemon, bluetooth-services, NVIDIA driver (if not used)
    bum

    gconf-editor

    gnome-session-properties

    nautilus-actions-config

    PowerTOP
    powertop

  21. Install alternative browsers for fallback or web developent: Opera

  22. Switch on the printer and enable "Toner Saving" in the printer preferences.

  23. Copy the backup data files to the new installed system.
